Can you 3D print your own furniture?

There is practically no industry that hasn’t been affected by 3D printing in one way or another at this point. The benefits and strong points of this technology are indisputable. It hasn’t bypassed the furniture industry either. Although traditional manufacturing methods are still used to make furniture on a mass scale, 3D printing has proven quite useful for designers who want to introduce some innovation in this field. What a relief after the mundane world of IKEA!

3D printing gives more design freedom because it becomes simple to produce unconventional shapes. For now, 3D furniture is costly, but we hope this will change with time. Here are some examples of popular furniture that was printed using 3D tech.

The Ocke Series

The Ocke Series is actually not a series at all – it consists of just a sofa and chair, both of which were designed by industrial designer Beatrice Müller. She works for BigRep, a German business specializing in FDM 3D printers with high precision and large print volumes. In the process of her work, Müller wanted to create a design that could speak for itself. She wanted people to understand that the sofa and chair were intended for 3D printing.

Nagami’s Brave New World

The Spanish brand set out to explore the “brave new world” of 3D printing and did just that. Its furniture series is comprised of four 3D printed chairs designed by Ross Lovegrove, Zaha Hadid Architects, and Daniel Widrig. The designers introduced the collection during Milan Design Week earlier this year. Rise and Bow, the first two chairs of the collection, were inspired by marine life. The third chair, called Robotica TM, was designed by Welsh artist and industrial designer Ross Lovegrove. It was made using a robotic arm, making a non-stop rotational process possible. It can be used as a small coffee table or a stand thanks to silicone inserts on top.

Sofa So Good

3d printing expert Janne Kyttanen, who works for 3DSystems, created an amazing lounger with a breathtakingly complex mesh design, akin to a steel-coated spider web. It was made using 3DSystems’ ProX 950, a big volume, industrial SLA 3D printer.

The design made it possible to print the lounger with as little material as possible without compromising on structural strength. Less than 3 liters of resin was used in the single-print design, which equates to 6000 layers. It weighs just 2.5 kg or under 5 pounds and measures 1.5 meters in length. The sofa cannot support more than 100 kilograms, however.

Sofa So Good is not for sale. It was created just to show what the ProX 950 3D printer could do.
